O Helsinki, my Helsinki

Di suggested I should post something about my home town, City of Helsinki. It’s something that has been in my mind for a while and I’ve got this idea in my mind about Helsinki. I will work on the idea and let’s see how it comes out. But here’s something little.

I currently live in Vantaa, which is the neighbor city. The greater Helsinki area contains total of four towns: Helsinki, Vantaa and Espoo are cities and Kauniainen being a smaller town inside Espoo. From all of these, only Helsinki has a structure of a”Real” city: there’s city center and suburbs. In Vantaa and Espoo, there’s about three larger centers that also sharecity offices and services together even though one of these centers is always the official “HQ” of the city.

There’s just under 600.000 residents in Helsinki and in greater Helsinki area there’s over a million people. Lot of people commute to work from outside of these cities, from surrounfing towns. This way it’s just ordinary city. As a factoid, Helsinki is similar in population compared to Boston. Weird, huh?

Helsinki is the capital of Finland and also the largest city, population-wise. It’s the place where I was born, a city that I love from bottom of my heart and even though there’s other cities in the world that I love, this is the one that stole my heart for good.

It’s not only because I was born in here and have lived my whole life in the area. I like how the city looks, feels, smells and even tastes. 😉 I feel comfortable in Helsinki. Even though no city feels and smells the same as any other, there’s still only three citirs I’ve been that get close to Helsinki.. New York is a city I was comfortable in from the first moment. I feel like home in there and it feels good. Second one is Paris. Paris felt like home and that’s a lot to say about a city. That city felt like a friend. Then there’s Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. It’s small city, but it’s old town is beautifull and the city has changed and is getting better every year. Even though every of those cities have their drawbacks, they were ones that felt good, cities that touched me emotianally and left me wanting more.

There’s lot of other places to visit on this little dirt ball of ours and I’m anxious to get on the road again, but I think I’ll never get to see all the places I’d like to. No matter what, I always have my first love to come back to, Helsinki. 😉
